VavuniyaNorth is former frontline territory that only reopened to resettlement after the war ended in May 2009, and there is almost nothing here in terms of infrastructure or outsider social life. The one exception is that NGO and development workers who operate in this area — building schools, clearing landmines, running health programs — occupy a very specific social tier that locals do respect and engage with. If you're in that world, the fact that you're one of a handful of foreigners in an entire district creates a strange social gravity. Outside of that context, there's no reason to be here and no one will understand why you are.

The physical landscape is flat scrub jungle with scattered farming settlements; the A9 highway is the only road that matters. There are no accommodations, no restaurants, and no English beyond the occasional schoolteacher.
