The town has a real tourist circuit — whale and dolphin watching from Uppuveli beach just north of town, a functioning guesthouse strip on that same beach road, and a mix of Tamil, Muslim, and Sinhalese residents that keeps it from being socially monolithic. A foreign man who puts himself on the Uppuveli strip during whale-watching season (April–September) has a functioning social environment with other travelers and some local social mixing at beach restaurants. The harbor views and the temple at the fort tip are genuinely worth the trip on their own.
