Chilaw is the main commercial town in the southern part of Puttalam District and sits about 90km north of Colombo on the coastal highway — close enough to the capital that it has actual infrastructure. The town is known for its fish market and St. Anne's Church in nearby Talawila draws massive Catholic pilgrimage crowds, which means outsiders passing through are at least a recognized category. The Tamil Catholic population here is somewhat more socially accessible than in the deeper interior. Worth a day stop especially if you time it around the market.
