Puthukudiyiruppu — known as PTK — is one of the few places in this district with some basic services due to its role as a former administrative center for the LTTE. The area around PTK has some of the most intact old-growth jungle in the Vanni, and if you're a serious nature traveler, that's genuinely compelling. A well-traveled foreigner with clear purpose here is treated with more dignity than suspicion. The almost total absence of other outsiders means any social interaction you do have is memorable and direct.

PTK was the de facto capital of LTTE-controlled territory for years and is now a modest Tamil town trying to rebuild. The infrastructure is functional at a basic level — you can get food, fuel, and basic supplies — but accommodation is minimal and the social environment is heavily family and community-centered. Foreign visitors are rare enough to be notable but the community's wartime history creates a certain guardedness with outsiders that doesn't easily dissolve. It's logistically possible to base here but socially not rewarding.

The entire zone was militarized post-war and remains one of the most tightly watched areas in northern Sri Lanka. Social openness to foreign men is essentially nil; the community has been through collective catastrophe and is insular by necessity. There is no social infrastructure for outsiders here — no guesthouses worth the name, no social spaces, nothing.
