Matara city is the commercial capital of Sri Lanka's deep south and home to the University of Ruhuna, which means there's an actual young population and some nightlife compared to the surrounding rural divisions. The Dutch-built Star Fort and the beachfront near the bus station give the city real character, and the Nilwala River estuarine area is genuinely scenic. If you speak to local women here as someone obviously foreign with a solid presentation, you'll get a better response than you might expect from a city that doesn't see many tourists.
