Nallur is built around the Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil, one of the most important Hindu temples in Sri Lanka, and during the 25-day chariot festival in July-August it pulls in enormous crowds of Tamil pilgrims including significant diaspora from the West. That diaspora presence — Sri Lankan Tamils from Toronto, London, and Melbourne — briefly creates social contexts that don't otherwise exist in this conservative neighborhood. If your timing aligns with the festival, the energy and scale of it is genuinely impressive and worth seeing.
