Thawalama sits at the far inland edge of Galle District near the Ratnapura boundary, deep enough into the highlands that it borders gemstone country — Ratnapura District is the source of Sri Lanka's famous sapphires and rubies, and some of that gem-trading culture spills into the border areas. For a man with a specific geological, agricultural, or conservation project, the remoteness is an asset — local communities here have knowledge of the forest and the land that is not available anywhere on the tourist circuit. Access is the barrier, not the people.
