Hikkaduwa is Sri Lanka's most internationally wired beach strip — the main road runs alongside a coral reef and every other building is a guesthouse, surf shop, or bar built around foreign visitor spending. Foreign men are normalized here because the entire local economy depends on them, and the population that works the tourist zone has built real fluency, social as well as linguistic, in dealing with outsiders. The surf breaks at Narigama and Wewala pull a steady crowd of foreign women traveling solo or in pairs, and the beach restaurants and reggae bars are genuinely social environments where meeting people happens naturally. One of the very few places in Sri Lanka where a foreign man can operate without constant friction.
