Bentota is where Sri Lanka's luxury beach hotel industry concentrated itself — the Taj Bentota, Avani, Club Villa, and a string of boutique properties occupy a narrow sand spit between the Bentota River and the Indian Ocean, and the clientele is predominantly European with real spending power. The water sports scene on the lagoon attracts a younger crowd and the operators who run it are used to social interaction with foreign guests in a way that is not purely transactional. A foreign man with resources and a solid profile will find doors open here that simply do not exist in the interior. The southern end near Aluthgama is more accessible for everyday scenes when you want a break from resort pricing.
