Surt was Gaddafi's hometown and the location of his last stand in October 2011, where he was captured and killed — the city bears the physical and psychological marks of being the site of the final battle of the civil war. It then became the capital of ISIS's Libyan state from 2015 until the Misratan-led campaign drove them out in late 2016, leaving parts of the city destroyed in urban combat again. Located on the Gulf of Sidra coast roughly equidistant between Tripoli and Benghazi, it has historically been a dividing line between Libya's two halves.
