Tripoli has some of the best street food in the entire Middle East — halawet el-jibn, kaak, and the sweets district off Khan al-Saboun are reason enough to spend a day here. The Citadel of Raymond de Saint-Gilles and the old Mamluk souk are genuinely impressive. But none of that translates into social opportunity for a foreign man.

Lebanon's second city runs about 700,000 people in the metro and has a real urban feel, but it's economically depressed — Tripoli consistently ranks as one of the poorest cities in the eastern Mediterranean. The old city and waterfront Al-Mina district are worth a few hours, the food scene is legitimate, but the social culture is conservative Sunni and nightlife is essentially nonexistent compared to Beirut.

Tripoli has been a flashpoint for periodic street conflict — the Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen neighborhoods saw active fighting for years, and the underlying tensions haven't gone away. The city is economically broken, socially conservative, and there's nothing here for a foreign man looking for social opportunity. Good food for a day trip from Beirut; not somewhere to base yourself.
