Jubail

High score (8-10) · Your profile
Jubail — Byblos — is one of those rare places where the ancient history is actually integrated into a functioning social scene: the Crusader port and Phoenician ruins sit right next to a waterfront strip of bars and restaurants that runs well into the night. The town draws an educated, relatively liberal crowd from across Lebanon and has enough tourist infrastructure that foreigners blend in easily rather than standing out awkwardly. Maronite Christian majority means this is among the most socially open districts in the country, and the Byblos International Festival brings significant international traffic in summer that opens the social pool considerably. Your hard currency position gives you full access to everything the waterfront offers at a fraction of what it would cost anywhere in Europe.
Mid score (6-8)
Byblos waterfront has a real scene in summer but the town is small enough that you exhaust it quickly — there are maybe five or six bars worth going to and you'll know the regulars within two weeks. The archaeological tourism angle means prices around the old port are elevated by Lebanese standards even post-collapse. It's a strong base if you're doing a Lebanon stint and want something outside Beirut, but it has the social ceiling that any small town has.
Lower score (below 6)
Byblos outside of summer and festival season is quiet to the point of being dull — the waterfront bars thin out significantly and the town reverts to a local community that isn't especially interested in engaging with passing foreigners. The history is remarkable and the old port is beautiful, but beauty doesn't generate social energy when the people who come for it have gone back to Beirut.
