Pak Lai is the main town here and sits right on the Mekong, making it a stop on the slow boat route between Luang Prabang and Vientiane — so a trickle of Western backpackers pass through. That gives the town a few functioning guesthouses, a riverside restaurant or two, and locals who have at least seen foreigners before. But almost nobody stays more than one night, and for good reason: once the boat leaves there is very little happening. A foreign man with time to kill might have a pleasant evening, but Pak Lai is a transit point, not a base.
