Hongsa
8.4
Mid score (6-8)
Hongsa runs on coal — the massive Hongsa lignite power plant (one of the largest in Southeast Asia, majority Thai-owned) has turned what was a sleepy village into a working industrial town with Thai engineers, contracted labor, and baht-denominated commerce. That Thai economic presence means better food, functioning guesthouses, and some social activity that would not otherwise exist this far into Xayabury Province. But it is still remote and the social pool is thin — mostly male labor camp energy, not the kind of place you stay more than a night or two. Worth a stop if you are passing through, not worth building a trip around.
