Vang Vieng is the only district in Vientiane Province where a foreign man can operate with genuine social ease — the entire town economy runs on tourism, and the bars, guesthouses, and restaurants along the Nam Song River are staffed by Lao who deal with foreigners daily. Women working in hospitality here have real exposure to outsiders and the language barrier is manageable. The government shut down the worst of the tubing party scene around 2012-2014, but functional nightlife and a social scene that doesn't exist anywhere else in the province remains. As a base for the region, nothing competes with it.

The government crackdown on the old party scene has made this a cleaner but also somewhat more sanitized version of its former self. It works as a social base; just calibrate your expectations for the type of scene it actually is.
