Pakse is the commercial and administrative capital of southern Laos — the one city in Champasak Province where a foreigner can actually build a daily life. The confluence of the Xe Don and Mekong rivers gives the city a specific geography and a cafe strip where educated Lao women in their 20s and 30s actually hang out. More Chinese investment has come in, but the older French-colonial street grid and the local coffee-forward culture keeps it from feeling generic.
