Yongsan
7.3
High score (8-10)
Itaewon has been the foreigner social headquarters of Seoul for 70+ years — built around the US military base that operated in Yongsan, the entire strip was architected to serve people who aren't Korean, which means English menus everywhere, non-Korean food from every region, and a local population that has been engaging with outsiders across every category for decades. Hannam-dong to the east has become the luxury residential address for Korean celebrities, executives, and diplomats, creating a high-income socially cosmopolitan crowd in a small walkable area. The Noksapyeong bar strip below the main Itaewon drag is more local in feel and less tourist-heavy. Being a foreigner is an explicit asset in Yongsan in a way that requires real effort to replicate anywhere else in Seoul.
Mid score (6-8) · Your profile
Itaewon's foreigner-friendly infrastructure is genuine but the district has gone through real turbulence since the 2022 crowd crush in the Halloween event that killed over 150 people — the street has recovered commercially but the social energy has a different quality now, and some of the density has dispersed to Seongsu and Hongdae. Hannam-dong remains excellent. The electronics market at Yongsan station is functional but no longer the destination it once was.
Lower score (below 6)
The version of Itaewon that existed before 2022 doesn't fully exist anymore — the crowd crush created lasting wariness about dense weekend events on that specific stretch of road, and some of the nightlife energy has relocated. A foreign man expecting the legendary Itaewon experience will find a competent but somewhat subdued version of it now. Hannam-dong picks up a lot of the slack but at a higher price point.
