Yeosu
7.4
High score (8-10)
Yeosu hosted the 2012 World Expo with a maritime theme and the infrastructure left behind is real — a developed waterfront, the Expo Ocean Park, a cable car over the bay, and hotel stock that's above average for South Jeolla. The bar and restaurant strip near Dolsan Bridge has genuine energy in summer and the seafood here is specific: grilled hairtail (galchi), spicy stewed octopus, and fresh oysters at the dockside markets are the Yeosu calling cards. City of 280,000 with enough domestic tourism that being foreign is an asset rather than an oddity, and the summer crowds include younger Koreans from all over the country.
Mid score (6-8) · Your profile
South Jeolla's best tourism city by a clear margin — the 2012 Expo waterfront gives it infrastructure that the rest of the province lacks, and the summer domestic tourism season makes it genuinely lively. Outside of summer and the peak travel months the city quietens considerably and reveals its underlying provincial nature. Still the best option in the region for a foreign man who wants some social life.
Lower score (below 6)
Yeosu's tourism reputation creates expectations that the off-season doesn't deliver on. Outside of summer the Expo waterfront feels more like a monument to past ambition than an active social scene, and the city's permanent population of 280,000 supports only modest nightlife. By any national standard it's still a small provincial city with a limited ceiling.
