Muju has a real ski resort — Muju Resort (also known as Deogyusan Resort) — which is one of Korea's better ski areas and actually hosted a World Taekwondo Championships. Winter season brings Koreans from across the country and the resort town dynamic loosens things up considerably compared to the rest of rural North Jeolla. If you ski or snowboard, this is one of the few places in this province where you can meet people in a social setting that isn't a workplace or school.

Muju works in winter around the ski resort and in shoulder seasons for Deogyusan National Park hiking. Outside of those windows it's a small mountain county with a population under 25,000 and not much happening. The resort infrastructure means some level of English signage and tourist services exist, which is more than most counties in this province can say. Seasonal destination energy — real when the snow is there, essentially empty otherwise.
