Ulleung Island sits in the East Sea roughly 130km off the Korean coast and is accessible only by a 3-hour ferry from Pohang or Donghae. The island is famous for its squid — dried squid is cured literally everywhere on the island — and has some of the most dramatic volcanic coastal scenery in Korea. Summer brings Korean tourists; off-season the population drops to about 10,000 residents. A genuinely wild and beautiful place to visit.

Ulleung is a destination island with real natural appeal — volcanic cliffs, clear water, squid cuisine, and an end-of-the-world remoteness that makes it memorable. But visiting and living here are very different propositions. The year-round resident life is small fishing community reality, completely closed to outsiders. Good for a 3-day trip, not a social base.
