Pohang
6.9
High score (8-10)
Pohang is POSCO territory — the steelmaker's global headquarters and main mill are here, which has created a genuine expat professional community of engineers and executives, particularly from Japan, India, and Southeast Asia. POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology) is one of Korea's elite technical universities and adds a high-caliber young population. The city has a real beach at Yeongil Bay and an active enough nightlife by Gyeongsangbuk-do standards. Of the province's industrial cities, Pohang has the most actual international depth.
Mid score (6-8) · Your profile
Pohang's POSCO economy gives it expat infrastructure and a professional class that's traveled and internationally minded, but the city's social scene is still built around Korean work culture and family life. POSTECH students are brilliant but often intensely focused on academics. The beach and seafood scene (this is the snow crab and raw fish coast) make it more pleasant than Gumi, but social opportunity still requires effort.
Lower score (below 6)
Pohang outside the POSCO and POSTECH orbit is a working-class port city with a strong local identity and not much patience for outsiders who lack clear institutional affiliation. The industrial waterfront character dominates the non-campus, non-tourist areas. Strong profile helps within the professional expat community but doesn't move much beyond it.
