Dongducheon is Korea's original GI town — the strip around Camp Casey has been running foreign-facing bars, restaurants, and entertainment since the 1950s, which means the social infrastructure here is explicitly built for outsiders in a way you won't find in most Korean cities. Bar owners know how to interact with foreign men, menus are in English, and Korean women in these areas are self-selecting for foreign interaction in ways that are structurally different from the rest of Gyeonggi-do. The town itself is small and rough without the base economy, but the receptivity within the bar district is genuine and the barriers are essentially zero. Best treated as a stop rather than a long-term base.

Dongducheon's social economy runs almost entirely on Camp Casey — the US Army installation just north of the city has sustained a foreigner-facing bar and entertainment district since the Korean War, and that infrastructure is still functional. But the base has been drawing down over years as Camp Humphreys in Pyeongtaek absorbs the bulk of US Forces Korea, and Dongducheon shows it — the bar strip is smaller and older than it was. If you want the GI town experience this is the original, but Pyeongtaek has more volume now. Works as a day trip from Seoul (about an hour by subway), not as a base.

Dongducheon's entire character is defined by Camp Casey, and as US military presence has shifted south to Camp Humphreys in Pyeongtaek, the city's foreigner economy has shrunk accordingly. What's left is a small, somewhat depressed northern Gyeonggi-do city without much going on beyond the aging bar strip. Korean civilian social life here is not oriented toward foreigners — the openness is concentrated in a narrow area around the base. If you're not specifically interested in the military-adjacent bar environment, there's nothing here.
