Yangyang has become the surf capital of South Korea — Surfyy Beach and the cluster of surf schools around it have created a genuine beach culture that is unlike anything else in Gangwon, and the crowd it attracts (young, sports-oriented, more internationally aware than average) is significantly easier to connect with than typical Korean beach tourism. The new Yangyang International Airport has direct budget airline connections that bring people in from outside the usual Seoul funnel. On a summer weekend the main surf beach has real energy and a foreign man who surfs fits in immediately rather than standing out awkwardly.

Yangyang's surf scene is real but seasonal and geographically concentrated — outside of the Surfyy Beach area and a few nearby spots the county is rural and quiet. The airport is underutilized for international flights currently. From October through May the surf crowd disappears and Yangyang returns to being a small coastal county.

In winter Yangyang is a cold, quiet East Sea coastal county with almost no social activity. The surf culture that makes it interesting in summer completely hibernates. A foreign man here outside of the June-September window will find it scenic and empty.
