Sokcho is the gateway city to Seoraksan National Park and has become genuinely popular with young Koreans as a weekend escape from Seoul — the Abai Village squid ink sundae is an actual local institution, not just a food tour stop, and the atmosphere around Cheongcho Lake and the beach has a real coastal-town looseness to it. The city draws a younger, more independent-minded Korean traveler than the organized family tourism of Gangneung, and that crowd is more open socially. The ferry to Vladivostok and the history as a city built partly by North Korean refugees gives Sokcho a more complex social texture than its size would suggest.
