Hoengseong
8.1
High score (8-10) · Your profile
Hoengseong is the gateway county to Alpensia and the Pyeongchang ski cluster, but it has almost none of the tourist markup — beef from this county (횡성한우) is legitimately some of the most celebrated Hanwoo in Korea and locals are genuinely proud of it in a way that gives you an easy conversation starter. The county has a rural dignity to it that differs from the ski resort artificiality nearby. A foreign man who spends time here rather than just passing through to the slopes earns a different kind of reception.
Mid score (6-8)
Hoengseong is primarily agricultural and the population is small and older-skewing. The Hanwoo reputation brings food tourists but it doesn't generate a social scene. Most foreigners who enter the county are in transit to Pyeongchang's ski resorts and the locals know it.
Lower score (below 6)
There is no real reason for a foreign man to spend time in Hoengseong socially. The town is quiet, English is essentially absent, and the infrastructure is set up for Korean domestic visitors who drive in for beef and drive back out. Rural Gangwon at its most self-contained.
