Thpong is a Cardamom Mountains district with genuine wild terrain — dense forest, rivers, and remote communities that have historically been isolated even by Cambodian standards. The Khmer Rouge used this area as a final redoubt, and that history has faded enough that the current generation is curious and outward-looking in ways their parents weren't. Foreign men who come through on jungle trekking routes or via the few eco-tourism operations that have set up here get treated as serious adventurers, which commands respect. The remoteness filters out casual travelers, so the foreign men who do show up here tend to be self-sufficient types who read well in that environment.

Thpong is primarily a forest and agriculture district in the Cardamom range — the terrain is dramatic but the social infrastructure for a foreign man is essentially zero outside of organized eco-tourism. You can have interesting interactions if you approach respectfully and have a guide, but nothing about Thpong makes casual social access easy. The appeal here is the landscape, not the social scene.
