Likoni is the southern mainland gateway — you reach it by the famous free government ferry crossing from Mombasa island, one of the more memorable commuter experiences in East Africa, with thousands crossing daily on foot and by car. The area itself is a dense, lower-income residential zone, but it's the jumping-off point for the entire South Coast, and the road south from Likoni leads to Diani, Tiwi, and Galu. If you're staging a trip down the south coast, Likoni is logistically useful as a cheaper accommodation base before crossing. The locals here are Digo and Swahili, and hospitality is genuine once you're past the ferry hustle.
