Sarysu District is a remote stretch of steppe in northern Zhambyl Oblast, named after the Sarysu River that winds through it. The few settlements here are agricultural villages with Kazakh-speaking populations who have had essentially no exposure to foreigners. Guest culture is strong — show up at the right household and you will be fed until you can't move. But the population is so small and spread so thin that even with warm reception, there's no social world to access.
