Named after Kazakhstan's national poet but don't let that fool you — Abay district is a post-Soviet coal mining zone in slow economic decline since the 1990s with a small industrial town at its center. The local population is working-class Kazakh with zero infrastructure for outsiders and no curiosity about them either. English doesn't exist here, social scenes don't exist here, and if you're not tied to local industry there's no foothold. Nothing to work with.
