The Tupkaragan peninsula juts into the Caspian and holds Fort Shevchenko, where the Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko spent ten years in tsarist exile — the history is genuinely interesting but the present is quiet. Kendirli beach sees some Kazakhstani domestic tourism in summer and is the most developed resort stretch on the Kazakh Caspian coast, but that still means very limited infrastructure and a crowd operating firmly within Kazakh social norms.
