Kofu is the only city in Yamanashi with actual urban density — Chuo Line direct to Shinjuku in 90 minutes, a wine bar scene that has grown with the prefecture's wine industry, and enough population to sustain a functioning nightlife strip near the station. The small foreign presence in the city means you stand out, and in a regional capital that has some exposure to outside visitors, that novelty can open doors that stay closed in purely rural areas. Kofu Castle ruins and the central park give the city a functional social geography that smaller towns lack entirely. As a base for the prefecture it's the only city that gives you actual urban footing.

The Chuo Line connection to Tokyo can easily become an exit path that you find yourself using more than a local base warrants. Most people visiting Yamanashi treat Kofu as a transit hub, not a destination, and there are good reasons for that.
