Nachikatsuura sits at the intersection of two things foreigners actually seek out: the Nachi Falls (Japan's tallest single-drop waterfall at 133m) and the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trail, which draws enough international hikers to make a foreign face less surprising here than in most of rural Wakayama. The tuna fishing port runs one of Japan's most active fresh tuna auctions, and the local seafood — maguro donburi, especially — is the real deal at low prices. If you're walking the Kii Oji trail section, you'll cross paths with European and American pilgrimage hikers at guesthouses. Still a small, aging town with no nightlife; the opportunity is trail culture, not city social life.

Nachikatsuura has a split identity — the Nachi Falls and Kumano Kodo trail bring international pilgrimage hikers through regularly, and the tuna fishing port is legitimately famous (the morning tuna market is one of the better food experiences on the Kii Peninsula). But the permanent population is around 16,000, heavily elderly, and the town itself is economically driven by fishing and budget onsen hotels for domestic tourists. Foreigners aren't unusual here the way they would be in deep-rural Wakayama, but there's no social infrastructure to sustain anything beyond passing connections.

A small fishing port and pilgrimage waypoint with a declining population, Nachikatsuura's social life doesn't extend much beyond the fishing cooperative and the guesthouses catering to Kumano Kodo hikers. The tuna auction at Katsuura port is the most interesting thing in town and it starts before dawn — not exactly a social venue. Outside of trail-season (spring and autumn) the pace drops to near nothing. The local population is aging faster than most of the already-old Kii Peninsula towns, and the economic gravity is entirely inward.
