Kozagawa is one of the most genuinely remote municipalities in the Kansai region — deep in the Kii mountain interior where the Kozagawa River cuts through old-growth forest. The river is exceptional for kayaking and freshwater fishing, and some small adventure operators run guided trips here in summer for Japan's outdoor community. The forests are dense enough and the roads winding enough that it feels far more isolated than the kilometer count from Osaka suggests.
