Fuchū's Tokyo Racecourse is one of Japan's premier horse racing venues — on race days the city pulls in a large, mixed crowd that bets, drinks, and socializes in a way that's unusually loose for a suburban Japanese city. A foreign man who shows up on a G1 race day and knows something about the horses will find conversations starting without any effort. The city has solid izakayas and a city-center bar scene that's more developed than most western Tokyo suburbs because of the racecourse traffic. A specific niche but a real one.
