Miyoshi
8.1
High score (8-10) · Your profile
Miyoshi City is the population center of western Tokushima — by the area's standards it's a real city, with a functioning commercial district, some nightlife, and the Yoshino River gorge (Oboke and Koboke) nearby which pulls adventure tourists and kayakers from across Japan. It's also one of the more affordable small cities in Shikoku, which has attracted some remote workers and younger settlers. If you're going to be in inland Tokushima, this is the only town with enough critical mass to build a real social life.
Mid score (6-8)
Miyoshi has more going on than any other inland Tokushima municipality but that's a low bar. The nightlife is sparse, the population is declining, and the expat presence is minimal. Good Japanese skills and a willingness to put in time are required to actually penetrate the social networks here.
Lower score (below 6)
Miyoshi City punches above its weight for this region but is still a small Japanese mountain city with limited social infrastructure by any urban standard. Without Japanese fluency you're going to find the actual social life here inaccessible, and what's accessible — a few bars, some chain restaurants — is thin.
