Yufuin is one of Japan's most visited onsen resort towns and draws a constant stream of visitors from across Kyushu and beyond — mostly couples and groups of women on weekend trips, so there's more female foot traffic than the local population of around 33,000 would suggest. The tourist-strip atmosphere means hospitality workers and passing visitors are accessible in conversation, but converting that into anything real is hard because most people are passing through on a 48-hour itinerary. Outside peak season the town goes very quiet and the permanent social scene is thin. Worth a weekend, not a base.
