Northern Oita's largest city and the self-proclaimed karaage capital of Japan — there are more than 60 specialty fried chicken shops here, which tells you something about where the city puts its energy. It's a real enough city with a proper downtown, a castle, and the birthplace museum of Fukuzawa Yukichi (the face on the 10,000-yen note), but the foreign presence is essentially zero outside of an occasional ALT teacher. Conservative northern Kyushu sensibility applies in full, and the social ceiling for an outsider is low.
