Yuzawa has a bullet train from Tokyo Ueno station in about 75 minutes, which makes it weekend destination infrastructure rather than true rural Japan — the entire economy is geared toward Tokyo weekenders and the town knows it. Naeba Ski Resort anchors the winter season, but it also hosts the Fuji Rock Festival every July — Japan's largest outdoor music festival — which means late July brings a completely different crowd running more like a music event than a mountain town. For a foreign man the Fuji Rock window is the obvious social entry point. Outside of ski season and festival season, the place goes relatively quiet.
