Ojiya is the center of Niigata's chijimi textile tradition — a fine crimped linen fabric produced here since the Edo period, now a designated Intangible Cultural Heritage. The city's entire identity runs through that craft, and outside of a textile museum and some workshops there is nothing for visitors. Working town with aging demographics and no social scene for an outsider. Day trip from Nagaoka.
