Murakami has one of the more intact Edo-period merchant districts in Niigata — old merchant houses along the main street that have not been demolished. The city is specifically famous for its salmon tradition: the local technique of hanging whole dried salmon in storefronts goes back to the feudal-era provisioning trade, and the sake breweries here are among the best in the northern part of the prefecture. Domestic tourism has picked up but for a foreign man the social environment is still quite closed — interesting for a day, not a base.
