Kawaguchi was largely destroyed by the 2004 Chuetsu earthquake and recovery has been slow — the population dropped sharply afterward and has not come back. The rebuilt community is small, elderly, and entirely rural, surrounded by mountains that make the geography dramatic but the social reality very closed. There is onsen here that draws day visitors from Nagaoka, but no overnight social scene of any kind. The landscape is the only selling point for an outsider.
