Itoigawa
7.5
Mid score (6-8) · Your profile
Itoigawa sits where the Japan Alps drop straight into the Sea of Japan, and it is the center of Japan's jade-producing region — jade was declared Japan's national stone in 2016 and you can find raw pieces on the local beach. The 2016 fire that burned 150 buildings put the city on the national map and rebuilding has brought some new energy. There is decent food and sake culture given the fishing economy, and the coastal scenery is dramatic. For a foreign man though, the social ceiling is low after dark — good stop on the coastal route, not a base.
