Nozawa has had a foreign presence since the 1980s when word spread internationally about the powder and the village's 38 free public onsens, and the community has accommodated that without being ruined by it. Australians and Europeans have made this a regular circuit stop and there are foreign-owned accommodation and bars that keep the international scene alive between ski seasons. The New Year's fire festival (Dosojin Matsuri) brings a massive crowd and real energy. Small enough that you actually meet people — there's no disappearing into a crowd.
