Matsushima is one of Japan's three officially designated scenic views — the pine-covered islands across the bay — which means tour buses, foreign tourists, and women who work in the tourism economy around oyster restaurants, ryokan, and the Zuiganji temple zone. The hospitality workers here have more daily exposure to outsiders than almost anywhere else in Miyagi outside Sendai. The pace is slow and tourist-town pleasant, and showing genuine interest in the oysters and pine islands (rather than treating it as a photo stop) opens conversations fast.

Matsushima's permanent residential population is only about 15,000 and the economy is almost entirely tourism. The women who work here are service-oriented and friendly but the transactional nature of a tourist town means most interactions stay at that level. If you're based in Sendai and want a day-trip social excursion with some probability of connection, it works. Trying to build a life here is a different story.
