Yawata
8.7
Lower score (below 6)
Yawata sits at the confluence of the Kizu, Uji, and Katsura rivers in southern Kyoto and is home to Iwashimizu Hachimangu, one of Japan's three great Hachimangu shrines, which draws serious pilgrims via a cable car up Otokoyama. The city of about 74,000 is otherwise a standard residential commuter belt on the Keihan line between Kyoto and Osaka. The shrine draws visitors who don't stay overnight and don't create a local social scene. No university, no nightlife, no particular leverage here for a foreign man beyond any other corridor suburb.
