Ujitawara
7.5
Lower score (below 6)
Ujitawara is a mountainous town of about 9,000 people east of Uji where tea has been cultivated since at least the 13th century — the monk Myoe planted seeds here and the town credits itself as one of Japan's earliest serious tea-farming sites. The landscape is all steep valley slopes and tea fields, the economy is entirely agricultural and forestry, and the social infrastructure is essentially zero. Small enough that you'd recognize every face within a week. There's nothing here for a man trying to build a social life from scratch.
