Uji

Mid score (6-8) · Your profile
Uji is Japan's most established matcha-producing city, home to Byodoin Temple whose Phoenix Hall appears on the 10-yen coin, and the main shopping street along the river approach is lined with century-old tea merchant families competing for the same tourist traffic. With about 188,000 people it's a real city with its own economy and identity rather than a pure day-trip stop, and matcha culture has made the local food scene genuinely interesting in ways that extend beyond the tourist zone. Foreigners are common enough around the temple and river area not to cause gawking, but sparse enough away from it that a man with social skills can still work the novelty. The limit is the absence of nightlife — for anything past 10pm the city defers to Kyoto.
