Miyazu is the access point to Amanohashidate, the pine-covered sandbar that has been on Japan's canonical list of Three Great Views since the Edo period, which keeps enough tourism flowing through to prevent the city from going completely dormant. With about 20,000 people, it has a hotel strip along the bay, some working fishing industry, and a historical castle town layout that gives it more character than a pure commuter suburb. Foreigners who make it this far north in Kyoto generate genuine curiosity rather than the practiced indifference of Kyoto city. The limit is that tourism here is overwhelmingly domestic day-trippers, the local economy is thin, and outside summer the town quiets down considerably.
