Kyotamba is a merger of several small mountain villages in western Kyoto Prefecture, known primarily for its Tamba black soybeans and chestnuts sold at highway rest stops to passing drivers. The population is around 14,000 and the economy is almost entirely agricultural — there is no social scene to speak of and no infrastructure for an outsider to meet anyone. The cedar-forested mountain landscape is genuinely beautiful but the communities here are tight-knit rural clusters that have been self-contained for centuries.
