Joyo is a residential city of about 75,000 people sandwiched between Kyoto and Uji that exists mainly as a place for people who work elsewhere to sleep. There is almost no nightlife and the commercial areas feel like they were designed for people whose real life is somewhere else. The social scene is essentially zero — this is family suburb territory through and through. Being foreign here just means you're the one guy at the local supermarket who stands out for no useful reason.
